Making a Colorful Splash on Your Big Day

Nice day for a white wedding? More brides are opting for a burst of color on their big day – but that doesn’t have to mean changing the classic white dress.

When it comes to your big day, it’s a chance to wear the kind of white dress you only get to wear once in life. It’s not surprising that white, off-white and ivory dresses are still the most popular color of choice. But that doesn’t mean you can’t inject some exquisite color and energy into your ceremony. Bursts of color are on trend in the wedding world. In the past, everything revolved around the same dress – but now anything goes in bridal fashion. This season, lighter fabrics, shorter lengths and splashes of color are in.

Chiffon is a hot fabric this summer influenced by trends on the catwalk. Chiffon offers a lighter, softer alternative to stiffer, traditional fabrics. Destination weddings, such as beach weddings, have changed the formal approach to wedding dresses to allow more flexibility and movement in the wedding wear. Easy to wear, flowing
dresses are increasingly popular with knee-length dresses in lace, silk, taffeta and satin a statement of choice. Textures are also more varied with embellished pleats and frayed edges to help dresses stand out from the crowd. Statement dresses are often matched with feathers or wispy headpieces as the classic tiara is on the wane.

But the fact is most brides still opt for ivory or cream dresses to pay homage to tradition. One way to inject color is to focus on shoes – hot pinks;
emerald green or sea-blue shoes can be matched with color themes in the bouquet, wedding chair covers or bridesmaid dresses for a show stopping effect. Color is also big when it comes to accessories – colored earrings and bracelets are a way to match the decor on your wedding chair covers. Wedding chair covers don’t just come in basic colors – there are hundreds of shades to choose from to compliment your dress and style. You can even match your wedding chair covers to your lipstick!

If you want to add a shot of exquisite color to your big day, opt for stylish wedding chair covers from Chair Covers UK for the best quality wedding chair covers with over 100 colors to choose from visit

ELMSFORD, NY -- Brides are choosing bright colors over neutrals and flowing chiffons. When Bill Levkoff added several new colors in its Spring 2009 collection, the company hoped for an enthusiastic response, but was certainly thrilled that the colors became an immediate hit. Colors such as Terracotta, Canary, Watermelon, Cornflower, Clover Glacier and Cornflower were added to several of the fabrics. Now Levkoff is seeing the popularity of these colors catapult.

"Over years the past several years, Bill Levkoff drew popularity from its more subtle colors. Dresses in earth tones such as Champagne, Taupe, Sable, and Celadon amounted to the bulk of Levkoff's sales. Now with the addition of these brighter colors, brides and bridesmaids are getting much more creative" explains Hallie West, Vice-President of Public Relations and Marketing.

Our clients are becoming more adventurous and trying new fabricsl. We added Charmeuse in our Spring 2010 collection, and the customers have loved it.

In the past few months, we have seen color combinations such as Terracotta (which is a peachy tangerine) and Watermelon (which is a bright, rosy and dark pink) combined with colors such as Canary (a bright yellow) and Clover. Levkoff has also seen brides choose colors such as Glacier, which is a very light and bright turquoise blue with Watermelon. The vibrant color ccombinations help the bridal party stand out in the crowd and brides are communicating that their bridal portraits are cheerful and gorgeous.

“Our clients are becoming more adventurous and trying new fabricsl. We added Charmeuse in our Spring 2010 collection, and the customers have loved it.” explains West. Levkoff's Charmeuse colors are also available in bright colors, but more subtle tones are alson on the Charmeuse color palette. Another trend Bill Levkoff is a major increase in Chiffon sales, explains West. "We offer the same color options for chiffon styles, so there is an option for any bride. “Our goal was to have our clients have that same choice of flirty and flowing chiffon styles that would let Levkoff comsumers show off their sense of fashion, color and style” says West.

“There will always be brides who are a bit more conservative,” says Hallie West. “Bill Levkoff still gets its fair share clientele who prefer earth tone muted bridesmaids' dresses. But, considering the fact that at one point a majority of our special orders were Champagne and Taupe and Champagne and Sable, we are seeing a shift in trends.

As an industry leader, Bill Levkoff was the first company to introduce black bridesmaids' dresses into the bridesmaids dress arena. Levkoff wants to assure its customers that they are sticking to their roots, and if black is the color you desire for your bridal attire, you don’t have to jump on the color bandwagon.

A Hilton Head Island couple is in the running to win an all-expenses paid wedding on ... Hilton Head Island.

Emily Nelson and Lt. Creighton Stuckart are one of three finalist couples in the Get Hitched on Hilton Head contest. While the islanders have a chance for a dream wedding in their backyard, the others are from places known for having Hilton Head-savvy visitors.

Lauren McGookey and Jason Sturdivant are a recent law school graduate and chef, respectively, from Columbus, Ohio. Julie Klein and David Battiste are physical therapists from Pittsburgh.

The winning couple will have their wedding weekend Nov. 12-14 at their choice of island locations: the 18th Green at Harbour Town Golf Links, The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn, The Main Street Inn or an oceanfront luxury home.

More than 14 local photographers, caterers and other wedding and resort businesses will donate their services for the couple over the weekend. A group of local businesses started The Get Hitched on Hilton Head Campaign in part to promote the island as a tourism and wedding destination.

MEET THE COUPLES

Lauren and Jason

• Lauren McGookey and Jason Sturdivant's relationship recently endured several hardships. Lauren lost vision in one of her eyes after undergoing surgery to remove ulcers, and Jason was diagnosed with diabetes. Despite this, Jason has found success as a chef in a Columbus-area restaurant and Lauren graduated from law school.

Julie and David

• Julie Klein and David Battiste got engaged on Hilton Head and now are looking to fulfill Julie's late father's wish that she'd get married on the island. The couple are physical therapists who plan to stay in Pittsburgh but make the island a second home.

Emily and Creighton

Around the world, weddings are special. During a recent trip to Grand Cayman in the Western Caribbean, I learned how brides and grooms are the same the world over. When it comes to get-away wedding ceremonies planned in far off locations, it is best to highlight the most interesting aspects of your specific wedding destination.

The rich and varied history of the Caribbean is linked to various wedding traditions. Some of the most popular tourist sites like Grand Cayman's Pedro St. James where the Cayman Island government first originated in 1831 are commonly used sites for such events. Historic sites and places with special meaning to the couple are often made an important part of the wedding day.

While planning a wedding in an exotic setting may be trendy, integrating the history of the locale into your wedding ceremony will spark memories for a lifetime. Today, contemporary couples partake in some local wedding customs that date back centuries.

For instance, the lure of the beach is important for many couples as they plan their wedding day. Caribbean weddings feature what the Caribbean is best known for … sun, sea, and sand. Many couples are planning and participating in submarine, beach helicopter fly-over, and underwater weddings. Avid scuba divers are taking the plunge--both literally and figuratively--into marriage. Ceremonies such as first time weddings to vow renewals are more and more commonly taking place under the sea. Views of the area's famed coral reefs and sea creatures from sea turtles to stingrays, not to mention the wedding ceremony itself, are all captured on videotape for wedding guests. The videos are streamed online for friends and family that couldn't make the trip.

In Grand Cayman, a sand ceremony is a typical addition to the exchanging of vows. Colorful sands are presented in separate containers, one for the bride and one for the groom. During the ceremony, the sands are united in a single container to show their new union. This tradition is synonymous with the lure of the sea.

Shells, the first travel collectibles, are popular wedding keepsakes. In the Caribbean, conch shells are widely collected, blown as celebratory horns, and their meat is used for delicious island cuisine. Also, crushed seashell pathways may be found throughout Grand Cayman and other parts of the Caribbean islands. They are used as entryways to homes and historic sites. The sound of visitors walking on these crushed seashells makes for a pleasant sound which informs residents that guests are at the doorstep.

Paths covered in large conch shells and crushed seashells leading open air porches and doorways are the impetus for integrating shells into wedding ceremonies. One of the most popular uses for seashells is to create a ceremonial wedding aisle covered with crushed seashells for the bride and groom. The shell pathway references the couple's journey toward a marriage union and their first home together. In most Caribbean wedding ceremonies, the married couple walks down the seashell aisle together announcing their marriage.

Exotic weddings can have a truly Caribbean flair by highlighting traditional island customs, seaside beauty, and sites that help the newlyweds capture memories that will last a lifetime.
